Dr. Charles Hitchcock to Retire as Dean of Academic Affairs

February 15, 2006 - After 39 years of exemplary service to Long Island University, Dr. Charles G. Hitchcock, Dean of Academic Affairs at the Southampton Graduate Campus, has announced he will step down as dean and will take a sabbatical beginning this fall to work at the advocacy organization Peace Action. Dr. Hitchcock will retire at the end of the one-year sabbatical. Jennifer Browne, Associate Provost of the Southampton Graduate Campus, has assumed responsibility for both the academic and administrative functions of the Southampton Graduate Campus. 

Dr. Hitchcock, a professor of sociology, has served as Director of the Social Science Division of Southampton College and chair of the Faculty Council for several terms. He has been active on numerous faculty committees, including Academic Standards, Long Range Planning, and Affirmative Action. In 1999, Long Island University awarded Dr. Hitchcock its David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence.

Among the many positions he has held during his tenure are Director of Special Academic Services (1975-78), Director of Counseling (1974-75), and Director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) (1974-75). For 10 years he was head men's tennis coach and led the team to its first winning season ever.

He earned his A.B. in political science from Colgate University, his M.S. from New York University and his Ph.D. in sociology from Union Graduate School. For six years, he chaired the East Hampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals. He also chaired the Board of Directors of The Retreat, a local agency that combats domestic violence, and has been a member of the board of the Alternatives Counseling Center. In 1984 he ran for New York State Assembly.

Prior to coming to Southampton Graduate Campus, he taught in the Peace Corps in Bangladesh and was a lecturer in American History at the University of Rajshahi.
