WLIU Staff Garner Press Club of Long Island Awards
Michael Mackey, host of Long Island Morning Edition on WLIU 88.3 FM, won first place in the radio arts category of the 2006 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards. A total of five WLIU staffers were honored at the Press Club’s annual awards on June 8, 2006.
Mackey, a graduate of Southampton College of Long Island University, was honored for his East End Profile feature.
Also winning awards were:
- Karl Grossman, veteran investigative reporter, winner of Long Island University’s George Polk Award and journalism professor at SUNY College at Old Westbury, for his feature, “The Opinion of Karl Grossman” – second place in the radio public affairs category.
- Joanne Sherman, a widely published freelance writer and humor commentator on WLIU since 2004, for “The Humor of Joanne Sherman: Box Spring” – second place in the radio feature category.
- James Asendio, news director of WLIU/WCWP and veteran of major station newsrooms in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sacramento and Pittsburgh, as producer in each of the above categories.
- Wallace A. Smith, general manager of WLIU and WCWP and director of the Long Island University Public Radio Network, as executive producer in each of the above categories.
WLIU, 88.3 FM, is the anchor station of the Long Island University Public Radio Network. Broadcasting from the Southampton Graduate Campus of Long Island University, WLIU produces news, jazz and public radio entertainment to Long Island and southern New England.
