Southampton, NY – The Southampton Players will hold auditions for “A Chorus Line” on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5 at 6:00 PM in Southampton College' Avram Theater. Performances will begin on Saturday, April 2 and run for three weekends.
This will be the second time the Players have produced the Pulitzer Prize winning musical under the direction of Michael Disher, Avram Theater Director. Remaining faithful to the original staging, Mr. Disher has, in the past, elicited the help of past Chorus Line dancers Lois Englund, Mark Martino and Stephen Nachamie.
"If there was ever a show that meant more to a cast and myself that was presented at Southampton College, I cannot remember it. ‘A Chorus Line’ remains a testament to a small school that achieved great things. With virtually no theatre major, yet an amazing strong theatre program, our students with many local students and community members came together and achieved what was thought my many to be impossible."
Those auditioning should come prepared with 16-32 measures of a show tune with sheet music in their key. Appropriate clothing and shoes are also required for the dance portion of the auditions. The opening jazz combination and the "One" combination will be taught at the audition.
Rehearsals will begin immediately after auditions. Many of the rehearsals will be held in New York and flexibility of schedule is paramount. Disher seeks not only dancers and actors but students from high schools and colleges.
"’A Chorus Line’ is a show that demands commitment and tenacity," said Disher. "It is a difficult show to learn, to dance and to earn. But the rewards in doing such are immeasurable."
Surpassed only by “Cats”, “The Phantom of The Opera” and “Les Miserables”, “A Chorus Line” ran for an astounding 6,137 performances. A testament to the genius of Michael Bennett, “A Chorus Line” follows an afternoon of a grueling audition at which 17 dancers are vying for 8 jobs. Throughout the course of the afternoon, they are asked to bare their souls and often verbally and vocally deal with issues and situations that led them to a career upon the stage.
Performance dates are April 2 and 3, 8, 9 and 10 and 15, 16 and 17. For further information, perusals scripts and information, please call Michael Disher at (631) 287-8088.
