Southampton, NY – The Southampton College women’s soccer team has broken into the national top ten Division II rankings for the first time in the College’s history.

A three-game winning streak over the last week saw the team rapidly rise from the 12th spot to eighth in the 200-plus strong national rankings and second place in the Northeast region.

The Lady Colonials now have a 7-0-1 record overall and a 4-0 record in the NYCAC.

Coach Mark Dawson said although Southampton has never been ranked in the top 25 nationwide, he was not surprised considering the team’s performances over the last two years.

"We have a pretty experienced team. Last year, they really felt they deserved to be in the NCAA Tournament and they’re very focused this year on making that happen," Dawson said.

Last season the Lady Colonials ended with a 16-5-1 overall record and 9-1-1 in the NYCAC. Dawson said he and the team thought they had performed well enough during the season to get an invitation to the NCAA tournament, but officials disagreed. The team was selected to play in the ECAC tournament, losing 1-0 to C.W. Post in the finals.

Dawson again sees C.W. Post as the major obstacle to overcome toward making the NCAA Tournament, but he’s confident his players have the experience, the talent and above all the desire to make it.

The next home game will take place against Merrimack College on Oct. 2 at noon.
