Southampton, NY - The Southampton Players are set to perform Shakespeare's famous tale of twins torn apart, "The Comedy of Errors." However, as the Players are known to do, they have added a unique twist. "We're remaining faithful to the text, but have set this production in 1920s America with a motion picture motif," said Michael Disher, director of the troupe that has won critical acclaim for its willingness to push the envelope. "It's essentially a 'silent movie" greatly enhanced by the brilliance of Shakespeare's words.

"The Comedy of Errors" will be staged in the Avram Theater at Southampton College Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. March 27-30 and April 3-6. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Group rates are available. Reservations may be made through the Southampton Players box office by calling 631-287-8899.

Generally regarded as Shakespeare's first play, the plot of 'The Comedy of Errors" is as complexly simple as his later plays are simply complex. It's also one of his shortest plays. However, this madcap farce is an audience favorite, centered around the mistaken identities of two sets of twins separated at birth - one pair both named Dromio (played by William Downes and Brian Donnelly) and the other both named Antipholus (Jeff Schaeffer and Bobby Shortle) - as they partake in an unforgettable adventure highlighted by misspent money, thievery, kidnapping, exorcism and love.

Add to the slapstick Disher's unique take on the action, where performers adopt the mannerisms of silent-film stars and old-fashioned title cards help the audience along. "Many of the actors had never seen a silent film before, so, as preparation, they studied the genre," Disher said. ?Working with Shakespeare's timeless humor, we've added a compact set and some surprises for the audience.
