News Director Jim Asendio and co-host Michael Mackey have launched The WLIU/WCWP Evening Report, a local and regional news program airing Monday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. In addition to a nightly review of Long Island and Connecticut-based news, they will supplement their reports with interviews with leaders, experts and authorities for a broad-based understanding of topics specific to WLIU 88.3 FM and WCWP 88.1 FM listeners.

"The Evening Report's format enables us to provide a nightly summary of local and regional news as well as long-form interviews on a variety of subjects," said Asendio. "The program also allows for follow-up reporting and story updates as events unfold."

Since Asendio's arrival at the station last fall, he has spent time developing a rapport with newsmakers and researching issues important to eastern Long Island and southern Connecticut. "Even though our listening area is considered an idyllic vacationland by many, those of us who live and work here grapple with issues that affect all communities: education, economic disparity, transportation, social issues and the protection of natural resources -- areas an informed citizenry need to know about," added Asendio.

Originally from New York, Asendio is a veteran newsman with a distinguished career in broadcasting, most recently from all-news KFWB in Los Angeles. Previously he was the news director of KFBK in Sacramento, California, WIND in Chicago, and a reporter/anchor at WCBS Newsradio, the CBS Radio Network, and 1010 WINS in Manhattan. He's a member of the Radio and Television News Directors Association and the National Association of Black Journalists. Asendio resides in Riverhead.

A station veteran of 5 years and longtime Long Islander, Michael Mackey is well known to WLIU listeners as host of WLIU's Morning Edition. Michael began his radio career as an adult undergraduate student in a communications course at Southampton College. He lives in Southampton with his family.
