Southampton College's Avram Gallery will feature the works of Susan Graham in a show entitled "Dreams & Arrays." The show will open on Monday, February 3, and run through Friday, March 14.
Graham, a native of the Midwest, focuses much of her recent work on her personal experiences with sleepless nights and imagined fears. This exhibition will draw on the aspects of insomniac musings and dream imagery of a futuristic space. The artist has set up the gallery with a wall to divide it into two spaces, one light and one dark. The light space will have a video projected onto eyeglasses and a selection of photographs and sculpture. In the dark area, slide and video projections of animated skies with clouds and airplanes crossing, flickering constellations, satellites and space exploration vehicles, interact with miniature sculptures in environments created for them.
Graham exhibited in the summer of 2001 at the Avram Gallery in a group show with her life-size sculptures of guns fashioned out of filigreed sugar framework, echoing the confectioners art of wedding cake design. Graham's works have also been shown at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, MI, and the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris and Officina Americana/ American Atelier, Bologna, Italy.
An artist reception will be held on Thursday, February 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:00 p.m. The gallery is open weekdays from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Call Director Beth Giles for more information (631)287-8234.
