Southampton College's Avram Gallery will hold an Artist Reception for celebrated photographer Chip Cooper on Thursday, July 24 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Cooper, who serves as the official photographer for the Southampton College Writers Conference, is currently showcasing his distinct artistic perspective in his one-man exhibit "South of the Hamptons" on view in the Gallery through August 1.
Cooper, whose photographs capture the untouched beauty of southern landscapes - from the coastal regions of the Carolinas to the bayous of Louisiana - has two published books of photographs; "Common Threads" a collaboration with writer Kathryn Tucker Windham and "Silent in the Land" a unique and historical depiction of southern architecture that serves as a guide to houses as diverse as simple dogtrots to elegant Georgian mansions. In "Common Threads" Cooper and his camera document the presence of an older South, complete with photos of flowering trees, churches, cemeteries and front porches while Windham's writings are mostly charming recollections of the small town south.
A native of Savannah, GA, Cooper is the Director of Photography at The University of Alabama as well as being a freelance photographer. He earned a B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1972 and did post-graduate work in photography there until 1973. At last summer's Southampton College Writers Conference, his camera captured the essence of the program's experience with up-close shots of literary luminaries Frank McCourt, Billy Collins, Margaret Atwood, Roger Rosenblatt, Matthew Klam and other conference participants.
The Avram Gallery is open weekdays from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Call Director Beth Giles for more information (631)287-8234. nd University
