Southampton College and U.S. Congressman Timothy Bishop (D-Southampton) are again teaming up to provide a $10,000 art scholarship to the winner of the 2003 Congressional high school art contest. The winner of the 22nd annual competition will be announced during a reception on Monday, April 28 at 4:00 pm in the Avram Family Galleries at the College.
"We are once again proud to honor the talents of these creative young artists," said Lee Kelly, Interim Provost of Southampton College. "The College and the surrounding communities offer a rich and stimulating environment to study the arts - museums, galleries, local artists and access to New York City. Our own Avram Galleries offer a variety of exhibitions each year by professional artists, faculty, and graduating art students. It's an exciting opportunity for this year's winner."
Congressman Bishop also offered his praise for the benefits of the art contest. "The contest provides a showcase for young talent and continues Long Island's rich artistic heritage," he said. I would like to thank Southampton College for their generous scholarship that will help these artists develop their creative talents while they receive a college education."
The winner's artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, alongside other scholarship recipients from across America. This year's panel of judges included two of Southampton College's art professors, Marc Fasanella and Neill Slaughter. Since the Congressional Art Competition debuted in 1982, members of the U.S. House of Representatives have conducted nearly 5,000 art competitions involving more than 650,000 high school students. For further information on the event call Congressman Bishop's District office at (631) 696-6500.
